December 2017 Dallas Medical Journal 25
Iʻd like to sign up for
more shifts. Is there
anything else I can do
to help? I can change
my schedule around
and continue to work
nights, if that is whatʻs
needed.
The police and fi re departments
and the Texas State Guard provided
safety and support to the entire
operation. The housekeeping staff
kept our area spotless, and the
command/support staff made
sure that our room was stocked
with supplies. The cooperation/
coordination of the local, state and
federal agencies was obvious from
the time we started until the end of
our shift. — Cheryl Kinney, MD
Anastasia Benson, DO,
a Dallas family practice
physician, volunteered at the
shelter, but more than that,
collected tens of thousands
of dollars from family practice
physicians across the country
to buy medical supplies for
distribution in coastal areas
aff ected by the hurricane.

The Dallas Ismaili Health
Professionals Associati on worked
closely with DCMS throughout
shelter operati on. The group was
instrumental in fi lling gaps in
nursing and physician schedules.
Through Nizar Bhulani, MD, IHPA
president, we scheduled two
physicians (Drs. Farida Valliani
and Mahmood Panjwani) and
about 15 nurses.
This has been an
incredible time for
all involved. It’s very
difficult for them,
but we had a large
community of people
pulling together to
provide aid, comfort,
and medical and
mental health care.
