A 63-year-old woman came in. She had no insurance and chronic
kidney problems. Every month she’d save money to see a doc
and get lab tests. She was very proacti ve and doing all the right
things. When I did her exam, I had to use clinical analysis and
decision making to determine how to help her. It was rewarding
to rely on diagnosti c skills that we were taught, years prior, in
medical school, but that, in daily practi ce, we move to second
place behind laboratory data or imaging results. It was grati fying
to know that eff ecti ve care can be delivered, in a megashelter, in
a ti me of despair, with nothing more than one’s ears, eyes and
stethoscope. She was lucky that when she escaped the fl ooding
and was relocated, she was relocated to Dallas and a shelter that
had physicians and a clinic to treat her.
